Connecticut Children’s president and CEO will retire at end of 2025

Since joining Connecticut Children’s in 2015, Shmerling has helped the organization become a leading pediatric health system spanning three states.
HARTFORD, Conn. — After a decade at the helm of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, President & CEO James Shmerling has announced that he will retire at the end of the year.
According to a release from Connecticut Children’s, Shmerling’s tenure in Hartford has been defined by significant growth, innovation and a nonstop commitment to improving children’s healthcare across the state and region.
Shmerling joined Connecticut Children’s in 2015 and has steered the organization’s development from a standalone medical center to a leading pediatric health system operating in three states.
Over the past 10 years, Connecticut Children’s has expanded its NICU network, created key alliances with adult health systems, implemented signature initiatives in population health, launched new programs and services and greatly enhanced access to specialized pediatric care.

Shmerling said on Friday that Connecticut Children’s is stronger than ever thanks to the dedication of the incredible team there. He added that when he started, it was necessary to build scale to thrive, which he said has been accomplished through a group effort.
“As we near the completion of our Health Compass 2027 strategic plan, now is the right time to ensure a smooth transition for the organization’s future leadership and next five-year plan,” Shmerling said. “This transition is bittersweet for me, but I know the children of the region now have access to the best pediatric experts in the nation.”

Under Shmerling’s leadership, Connecticut Children’s became a national leader in pediatric innovation, research and partnerships. The organization made headlines in 2021 as the first in the nation to administer the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine. This was televised live on Good Morning America for the country to see.
John Rubin, chair of Connecticut Children’s Board of Directors, said that Shmerling has positioned the organization as one of the best pediatric healthcare providers in the country.

The Board of Directors will now delve into the search for the organization’s next CEO and expect a seamless transition. Shmerling will remain engaged in his role until the end of 2025 to ensure a thoughtful and strategic leadership shift.
“We are incredibly grateful for Jim’s contributions and look forward to celebrating his impact over the next several months,” Rubin added. “We are confident that Connecticut Children’s is well-positioned for continued success as we embark on this next chapter.”
