Hyderabad: India’s healthcare sector is undergoing a rapid transformation. The Artificial Intelligence revolution, robotics and ground-breaking innovations have created countless opportunities, but they do not come without their share of challenges. Shedding light on the health sector’s potential and its most pressing issues amid the digital transformation, TV9 Network and South First hosted a Dakshin Healthcare Summit 2024, a thought leadership conclave to bring together the brightest minds in healthcare and create a unique platform for exchange of ideas and opinions, to innovate and ideate how people can live a longer, disease-free and healthy life.
The conference kicked off with an inaugural address by Dr Sangita Reddy, Joint Managing Director, Apollo Hospitals at Taj Krishna In Hyderabad.
Longevity for Indians
Moderating the panel on the topic of Secrets of Longevity, Unravelling the Science was Arvinder Singh Soin, Institute of Liver Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine, Medanta. “Heart attacks, kidney disease and other diseases are preventable, especially among Indians,” he said.
Dr Vritti Lumba spoke about the preventable and predictable aspects of medical sustaining & emphasized predicting and preventing metabolism and insulin resistance.
The role of nutrition in longevity
Chiming in via video conference, Ummer Qadeer, Clinical Process Lead Physician, Hooke, London, talked about lifestyle intervention and said, “There are no symptoms to know about cholesterol, sugar and the diseases which cause complications later. The only way is to control our nutrition and it all begins with analysing what one puts in one’s own body. Reducing saturated fats, protein intake, fibre intake can be very helpful. Without nutrition and fitness, people tend to gain back the weight they lost. By limiting metabolic syndrome, intervention can be made for cardiovascular disease. Cognitive decline later on in life can be prevented and all the links need to be implemented to prevent diseases eventually.”
Addressing Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, “A lot of good things have been seen when a person is exposed to highly concentrated oxygen. Anti-inflammatory benefits for Osteo Arthritis among others can be seen, under proper medical supervision,” Dr Vritti Lumba said.
“People who are on metformin for diabetes, live longer. It improves your insulin sensitivity,” Dr Lumba said speaking about the use of Metformin.
Are anti-ageing drugs the right way of going about longevity?
Speaking about longevity and anti-ageing drugs, Dr Arvinder Singh Soin said that the market in the US has increased exponentially. Prashanth Prakash, Managing Partner and Founder, of Accel India said, “There’s longevity now and longevity next. We are investing in longevity clinics. There’s a blurring of lines between Pharmaceuticals and Neutraceuticals. The third area is devices. Another fertile area for investing is skin. A lot of money has been made in investing in skin, where age reversal has been demonstrated.”
Addressing metabolism, the panel said, “We were not programmed to consume this much sugar. How much protein, carbs, and fats do you need to consume to improve your quality of health? Calorie restriction is the only way of living long. We are far away from accessing gene therapy. Improving lifestyle, and nutrition is the secret. This is what fundamental research says.”
“Sleep is the soil, plant is your life”
Speaking about the importance of sleep, Dr Manvir Bhatia, Director and Founder, of Neurology and Sleep Centre said, “In simple terms, when we go through sleep, we go through different stages, at least 4-5 cycles. Our cortisol system goes down when we sleep. Sleep deprivation activates the inflammatory system in your body. We are obese and angry due to lack of sleep.”
Founder, of SOHFIT, Sohrab Kushrushahi said that fitness is not just the number on a weighing scale. it’s not one thing. My parent’s generation focused on cardiovascular exercise, maybe walking. Is there a strength aspect to it? I hate to break it to you, but walking is not exercise. Every individual needs to do strength training at least a couple of times a week. The older we get, we need it even more. That’s what me and my team do. Food and sleep are also a part of fitness.”
