Pediatric Rankings: Children’s Health Now Has Two Top-10 Specialties

U.S. News & World Report has again named Children’s Medical Center Dallas and Cook Children’s Health Care System in their annual Best Children’s Hospitals national rankings. This 2024-2025 honor list marks the seventh consecutive year that Children’s Medical Center Dallas has ranked nationally in every specialty area and remains the only pediatric hospital in North Texas to earn this distinction. This year, the hospital has two specialties ranked in the top 10 nationwide.

Since 2008, Children’s Medical Center Dallas has been recognized as one of the top pediatric hospitals in the nation across all specialties 13 times. U.S. News & World Report expanded its specialty categories from 10 to 11 with the introduction of pediatric and adolescent behavioral health, in which both Cook Children’s Health Care System and Children’s Medical Center Dallas achieved a ranking in their inaugural year. The latter is the only pediatric system ranking 11 out of 11 specialty categories in North Texas.

The top hospital in Texas remains Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, the only facility in the state to make the U.S. News honor roll of ten pediatric hospitals nationwide. Children’s Health is ranked as the second-best pediatric hospital in the southwest region, and Cook Children’s is ranked No. 4. Scottish Rite for Children’s pediatric orthopedics program is ranked second in the country.

The North Texas-based pediatric system moved up two rankings in the orthopedics department, making it the nation’s second-best location for pediatric orthopedics. Children’s Medical Center Dallas also improved its rankings in pediatric cardiology and heart surgery, pediatric gastroenterology and GI surgery, neonatology, pediatric pulmonology and lung surgery, and pediatric urology in this year’s honor roll. “Being recognized annually by U.S. News & World Report across all specialties is a profound honor and a testament to the exceptional work of our outstanding team members and academic physician partners at UT Southwestern Medical Center,” expressed Christopher J. Durovich, president and chief executive officer at Children’s Health.

Seven of Fort Worth-based Cook Children’s Health Care System’s specialty programs were also ranked among the best in the country. For Cook Children’s as a whole, the rankings highlight longstanding excellence in a variety of areas, including Cook Children’s cardiology (jumping to No. 37 in the nation) and Cook Children’s orthopedics (moving up 16 spots in the rankings from No. 40 last year to No. 24).

“It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized by U.S. News & World Report once again,” said Rick W. Merrill, president and CEO of Cook Children’s. “This recognition is a testament to the exceptional work of our doctors, nurses, and staff, who consistently strive to provide the best possible care for every child, every day.”

For the 2024-2025 rankings, U.S. News & World Report, together with RTI International, an independent North Carolina-based research and consulting firm, collected and analyzed data from over 100 children’s medical centers. The rankings also incorporate surveys from over 15,000 pediatric specialists who identify the top hospitals for treating the most critically ill children.

Since 2007, U.S. News & World Report has evaluated specialty care at pediatric hospitals to help families find the best medical care for children with complex or life-threatening health conditions. The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings are designed to guide parents, caregivers, and their physicians in making informed decisions. “When confronted with the daunting task of selecting a hospital for their child’s specialized medical needs, parents and caregivers can use U.S. News’ evaluation of pediatric hospital performance as a valuable resource,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis and managing editor at U.S. News. “These rankings provide a trusted tool for navigating healthcare choices.”
